Department Spotlight: Makerspace

Mike DiRocco in the Makerspace

As much as we love to promote our collection of books, we know that learning is not done by reading alone.  Rob Mpoledor and the pumpkin laser-engraved in the MakerspaceWe have an amazing department here at the Library that is available for a more hands-on learning approach.  Our Makerspace is run by our IT manager, Shawn Arbogast, along with a staff who is more than happy to show you how to use our state-of-the-art equipment.  This department focuses on training you, as a patron of the Louisville Public Library, how to use the various machines housed in the Makerspace and the new Makerspace Annex.  Once trained, you are able to come in and use the equipment on your own (although staff is always available to help or offer a refresher course).  Whether you are new to the equipment or a seasoned pro, we do ask that you Book-a-Librarian (BAL) in order to ensure that the right person is available to train you or to guarantee that the piece of equipment you need is available when you come in.

Shawn works with Lois Lee, a frequent patron and volunteer, in the MakerspaceOur Makerspace staff often come up with projects for you to come in and make but they are also here to help you bring your own creations to life so don’t be afraid to bring your ideas to them.

All of our equipment is free to use but there could be a small fee for materials.  Bring in your own materials and there is no charge at all.  If there are any questions as to what materials you need, call the Makerspace at 330.875.1696.

We offer the use of multiple 3D printers (if you are bored, check out www.thingiverse.com and open yourselves to the world of 3D printing!), a vinyl cutter (great for making signs or wall art), a poster printer, a 27” wide laminator, sewing and embroidery machines, two laser engravers, a button maker, 2 Cricut craft cutters, and a heat press (use these last two together for custom t-shirts)!

The Makerspace staff would love to help you make those personalized, custom gifts for teachers, graduates, family members, or maybe just something for yourself!

See our Library Makerspace page for more details!
