Making Connections @ the Heart of Our Community
Clowning Around at the Library
Author Toni Morrison in her novel Jazz wrote, "Laughter is serious. More complicated more serious than tears." This summer, teens at Louisville Public Library are taking laughter very seriously. They are attedning the LPL Teen Clown School. The clown school is being held in conjunction with the Teen Summer Reading Program, "All the World's a Stage." Margery Greenwood will be the class instructor. Mrs. Greenwood is an English teacher at Louisville Middle School. She originally trained as a clown with a church youth group in 1992, and has participated in clowning at church youth services, church parties and street clowning. Mrs. Greenwood's clown personality is named "Fylo" and she says, "When Fylo comes out to play, it's just pure fun." One of the things that Mrs. Greenwood really enjoys about clowning is the combination of acting and letting another personality come out to play. She shared, "It is priceless when a child comes up and takes your hand."
In six separate classes, Mrs. Greenwood's clown students are studying clown makeup, how to develop a clown personality and how to design clown skits and gags.
The clown students will have an opportunity to display their newly developed clowning talent at the Summer Reading Club Carnival on June 21, 2002. The new clowns will be able to show children that reading is fun and that their library is "The Greatest Show in Town."
Services - New, Revised and Little Known
Color PhotocopyingA new service being offered by the library is color photocopying for the public. Cost of the copies will be $.75 for 8.5" x 11" or 8.5" x 14" copies and $1.00 for 11" x 17" copies. Staff members will make the actual copies for you. If you are having a number of copies made, you can either wait for them to be run or pick them up at a later time.
Laminating
A new laminator has been purchased. For a time, we have not had lamination available. It is now available again.
It has been necessary to raise the prices to keep up with the cost of supplies, but the increases are very
modest. Three sizes are available: 6" x9", 9" x 12", and 12" x 15". The larger sizes are no longer available
here at the library. As with the color copier, staff does the lamination either while you wait or by having
you pick up the finished product at a later time.
Renewal of Materials on the Internet
Perhaps you are rushed for time and just cannot get to the library or call to renew your materials. There is
another possible solution. You hop on the Internet, log on to our online catalog
and select "Patron Information." After you log onto your own library record, you can choose "Items Out." You
will get a list of all items checked out on your library card and the due dates. Follow the directions listed
on the screen to renew your items.
Keep in mind that the computer will know if an item has already been renewed (one renewal is maximum on books and compact discs). And some items, such as DVDs and videos, cannot be renewed. The computer may also be unable to renew an item because another patron has a hold on it. In those cases, you will need to return the item(s).
From the Director
Betsy Ketchum, Director
The library is a constantly changing place. We have gone from a place to borrow books to a multi-faceted service facility. Yes, we still have books, and lots of them, but we also have videos, compact discs, books on tape, reading theme kits, and many other forms of media. in addition, we offer many services and serve as a clearing house for information. We are constantly striving to serve our patrons. Because of this, we would like to have your suggestions and ideas about what you would like to see in the library and what kinds of services you would like to get at the library. We will be putting a suggestion box in our foyer so that you can give your input, anonymously, if you prefer. Obviously, we cannot be all things to all people, but we want to be the place you think of first when you need information.
Carnival Volunteers Needed
Adult and Teen volunteers are needed to help run games at the Summer Reading Club Carnival on June 21, 2002. Volunteers will be needed from 1:00 pm until approximately 3:30 pm. If you can spare a few hours of your time on June 21, please call Mrs.Lang at 330-875-1696.
Did You Know?
...both the display case in our foyer and the museum case inside the library are available to display your collection of arts and crafts, collectibles, hobbies and the like? Ask at the Circulation Desk for details....the library subscribes to the Large Print edition of Reader's Digest?
...the Reference Department, in cooperation with the City of Louisville, maintains a copy of the Codified Ordinances of Louisville, Ohio? Complete through March 2001, city laws governing the administration of city government, traffic, general offenses, business regulations, utilities and streets, zoning, building codes and fire prevention are arranged (coded) by subject for ease of use. As the city prints the updates they are added to the library copy of the ordinances.
Cruising the Highway with Books on CD
If you have purchased an automobile or updated your sound system in the past several years, chances are pretty good that you have a CD player. You may have listened to your favorite music CDs or even burned your own compilations, but did you know that you could borrow books on compact disc at the library? The earliest CD players in cars were not conducive to listening to audio books. They skipped and returned to the beginning when the car was turned off. Today these issues are no longer a problem. Bumps and turns do not upset the play, and the stories pick up where they left off when the ignition was turned off. The sound of CD books is often clearer than on tape, and they are less prone to damage, although they will still warp in a hot car!
Louisville Public library has a number of popular titles on CD including mysteries, romance, suspense and non-fiction. Also included in the collection are several plays with full casts such as "The Odd Couple" and "Pygmalion." Recently the library has added the four Harry potter books on CD.
Adult patrons may check out books on compact disc for two weeks. Stop in today and make your vacation drive more interesting.
That's Amore!
by Cheryl Tate (LPL Patron)
In May, the teens at First Church of the Nazarene hosted a spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser. Eager to turn their church fellowship hall into an Italian restaurant, they borrowed several paintings and CDs from the Louisville Public Library. potted plants were scattered throughout, and paintings were used in several displays that included terra cotta pots, greenery and clusters of artificial grapes. With Dean Martin singing "That's Amore" and "Volare," the mood was set. The fundraiser was a great success and the teens are still singing Martin's old hits.
Summer Reading Club
All the World's a Stage for Kids
This summer, the Teen Advisory Board of Louisville Public Library has chosen "All the World's a Stage" as the theme for the 2002 Teen Summer Reading Program. Area teens will have an opportunity to read and review young adult books, register for weekly prize drawings, and volunteer to helpat book the Summer Reading Club Carnival and the puppet show sponsored by the Teen Advisory Board. Registration will begin June 3, 2002 and the program will run June 10 - July 19.Spending your summer with a good book means more than just reading. It means putting all the stories and information found in good books into action. Join the Teen Department at Louisville Public library as we explore performing in just a few of its many forms: clowning, puppets, story telling and reading a good book.
Your Library - The Greatest Show in Town
Just like last year, participants will receive stamps for their Reading Club folders. Every week, the library will issue a different stamp. Collect four different stamps on your reading record by visiting the library, or bring in a postcard from your vacation destination and we will issue you a special stamp. You must collect four out of seven stamps by July 19 to earn your prize.
