Introduction

Our fine police force serves the community, enforcing state laws, local ordinances and federal statutes. Thirteen sworn, full-time officers, including three lieutenants and one chief, are assigned to the patrol division. Our part-time sworn officers are also an integral part of the Police Department, which responds to over 4,000 calls per year. The volunteer Police Chaplain and designated Police Psychologist both provide special services during certain calls.

In 2000, the City completed $29,000+ in upgrades to the dispatch communication services, which included a new tower and antenna,  to meet the increasing need of emergency communications.  Additional life saving equipment was placed in police cruisers in order to enhance safety services and to gain a higher probability for successful recovery of victims.

Divisions

Our department has four divisions - Operations, Communications, Administrative and Juvenile. Operations consists of all patrol, investigative and relative activities including bicycle patrol officers. Communications consists of all activities related to the dispatching of emergency services. The Administrative Division controls the preservation of departmental information services and managerial tasks. The Juvenile Division was developed to keep first time non-serious youth offenders out of the juvenile court system. The division offers youth programs and special programs in coordination with the City Administrative office and area schools all aimed to keep Louisville youth safe and positively involved in our community.

Phone Service

A confidential phone service, 875-INFO, was established by the Police Department as one more service to the community. The service answers questions or concerns about our neighborhoods and can answer general question on community services. The line is staffed by volunteers at the Juilliard Center.
