Lost and Damaged Items
Louisville Public Library reserves the right to charge fines for replacement and processing costs of items lost or damaged.
Lost Items
For items which are lost but not overdue, the patron will be charged the replacement cost of the item plus a processing fee.
For items that are lost and overdue, the patron will be charged the replacement cost, the processing fee and a flat fine.
If a lost and paid item is returned within 30 days after it has been paid for, the cost of the item will be refunded, but not the processing fee unless the item is no longer in print and not available to be purchased.
Damaged Items
If an item is damaged so that it cannot be circulated again, and it is not overdue, the patron will be charged the replacement cost plus the processing fee.
If an item is damaged so that it cannot be circulated again, and it is also overdue, the patron will be charged the replacement cost, processing fee, and a flat fine.
If an item is damaged but can still circulate, it will be handled on a case by case basis depending on the extent of the damage. In most cases, damage will be assessed by the department head; however, if the damage is severe, the Director will be consulted. Desk persons may also assess charges in minor cases.
